Gifted and Talented Projects for KS1 and KS2

KS2 Projects

Year 5-6 only
Maths in Motion

This project will involve working with a simulation program called "Cars - Maths in Motion". This program provides a practical context within which children will have experience of using percentages, measuring angles, problem solving and arithmetic calculations involving distances. Teams of children measure and evaluate a Grand Prix circuit and plan a set up for a formula 1 car. They then devise a race strategy and calculate safe speeds for the different elements of the track plan. A certain number of practice laps are allowed to allow adjustments and improvements to the car set up.

Year 3-6
Robotics
This project involves pupils building and programming smart robots through a natural, step-by-step learning process for team-working, creative thinking and problem solving. Pupils will learn practical programming techniques. This covers aspects of Design and Technology and Science.

Year 4-6
Science Video

Habitats (Year 4), Earth Moon and Sun (Year 5), Forces In Motion (Year 6), Pupils re-edit video clips to explain a science concept. They write and record their own narration to accompany their re-edited video.

Year 5-6
Animated Story Telling

Pupils storyboard a movie and animate the characters by using an innovative programme called “Crazytalk” which allows pictures and photographs to be brought to life by taking images of inanimate objects and making them talk with accurate lip-syncing and facial expressions. This activity/software has potential to advance learning in:

  • Literacy – e.g. stimulating creative writing
  • Thinking skills – e.g. empathy, reasoning
  • Creative curriculum – e.g. historical investigation

Years 4-6
Making a News Programme

Using the Espresso Newsbites as a starting point, pupils will use a current news story to present their own news programme. They will edit and import video clips, write scripts and present the news with a webcam. Alternatively the pupils could write and present a radio broadcast and publish it as a podcast.

Years 4-6
Film Literacy
A project in Partnership with the BFI to develop children's understanding of the moving image

Year 5-6
3D Game Design using Mission Maker
Pupils explore a 3D Game environment using their logical thinking skills. They develop this virtual world and solve the problems encountered. This project gives pupils an opportunity to work with some of the latest games-based technology, and builds on research which shows that this type of project can provide a motivating and challenging learning experience for pupils.

Year 3-6
Creative Writing

Pupils produce a piece of creative writing about the Serengati National Park. A wide variety of interactive stimuli are used to inspire the children's writing, including the Wii simulation game, Wild Earth - African Safari, which encourages creative and discursive writing at KS2. Project inspired by Tim Rylands

Key Stage 1 Projects

Fun with Numbers
Using IT to extend children in KS1 with a gift for mathematics. Pupils explore numbers through real world modelling.

Comic Production
Using “Comic Life” to produce a comic with photos and text on one of a variety of themes. (eg retelling a story, solving a dilemma)

Stop Motion Animation
Making a short sequence and creating characters, scenes and props to use in their animations.

Green Screen Video
Prepare a narration and pictures to act in front of the green screen to produce a video.
